The properties of abalones connect us to our highest chakras: primarily the crown, third eye and heart chakras. The mother-of-pearl that lines the abalone shell, in tandem with the shell itself, is said to activate intuitive qualities like clarity regarding situations, sensitivity, and imagination. Holding the abalone during cleansing rituals gives a sense of purity.

Abalone is believed to have divine energy, using it with sage in the act of clearing the space invokes the spirit of the ocean and uses our highest chakras as a conduit to the divine realm.

This ritual can be practiced at any time, but it is extremely useful to eliminate negative energy after an argument, when we move into a new house, when returning home from a trip or places where there were the crowd, when we start a new job. To start, light the sage and let the abalone collect the falling ash. Use a feather or your hand to send the smoke over the body, from head to toe. Visualize our mind being cleansed of all the toxic energy that clings to it. Then move to all areas of our living space. Since the abalone shell is a container of water, keep it protected from the fire of the burning sage by lining the bottom with a thin layer of sand. Sand also makes it easier to spread burning sage or other cleansing tools like Palo Santo holy wood.
