Catlinite, also known as *pipestone*, is a soft, reddish-colored metamorphic clay that was highly prized by some Native American nations, including the Lakota and Sioux, for making ceremonial pipes, hence the name "pipestone." Catlinite is relatively easy to carve when wet, allowing artisans to create fine, detailed objects.

Catlinite can only be found in a few places in the world, the best quality from southwest Minnesota is a stone of interconnection between body and mind. Traditionally, only hand tools were mined here, with access restricted to authorized tribal members to prevent overexploitation.
