Catlinite from Minnesota (Pipestone) — sacred red ceremonial clay

Catlinite, also known as pipestone, is a red clay stone of major cultural importance in North America. It has traditionally been used by several Indigenous nations of the Plains, especially the Lakota and the Sioux to create ritual objects such as talismans, totems, and above all ceremonial pipes (calumets), symbols of prayer, peace, and communication with the spiritual world.

A unique material: soft and highly carvable

From a geological standpoint, catlinite is a fine-grained, relatively soft rock (often described as argillite / metamorphosed mudstone). This texture makes it easy to carve with precision, allowing for detailed pieces, and it can be polished to reveal a deep, earthy red.

Origin: a rare stone tied to a protected place

The best-known catlinite comes from southwestern Minnesota, within the protected area of Pipestone National Monument, where the stone occurs between layers of quartzite. Extraction there is strictly regulated:

  • it is carried out using hand tools only (no power tools),

  • and access is limited—via permit—to enrolled members of federally recognized tribes, to protect the deposit and prevent overexploitation.

Symbolic dimension: interconnection and honoring the sacred

In a well-being approach, catlinite is often described as a stone of interconnection between body and spirit, inviting a deeper sense of the sacred in all things and a return to more mindful presence. Its earthy red tone naturally evokes grounding, emotional steadiness, and a calmer inner state.

Important: catlinite is a sacred material for many communities. In our approach, we emphasize respect, traceability, and intention: honoring the history of this stone, without claiming to reproduce or appropriate ceremonial practices that are not ours.

How to use it (well-being approach)

  • Hold the stone in your hand for a few minutes to encourage centering and inner peace

  • Use it as a meditation support to strengthen intention, clarity, and emotional stability

  • Place catlinite in a living space as a symbolic reminder of respect, sacredness, and alignment.
