Billitonite is a tektite, meaning a natural glass created by a meteorite impact—a rare phenomenon, which makes these pieces naturally sought after. When a meteor strikes the Earth, the energy released is so intense that rocks and sediments melt instantly, then are ejected into the atmosphere as tiny droplets. As they cool very quickly during their flight, these droplets solidify into unique forms: rounded masses, irregular silhouettes, and surfaces that appear “sculpted” or finely textured. The name “Billitonite” refers to the region of Belitung (Billiton) in Indonesia, an area often associated with Southeast Asian tektites.
